1. Cracking - concrete changes in volume as it ages and cracks with shrinkage or movement in the supporting base. In typical concrete this change amounts to about 1.5 mm in 3 metres. The reason that contractors put joints in concrete pavements and floors is to allow the concrete to crack in a neat, straight line at the joint.
2. Spalling - concrete surfaces also flake or spall when subjected to freeze-thaw cycles and where the surface is weaker due to retention of a high water content during finishing and a correspondingly high level of surface laitance.
